Thousands pack the Superdome for WrestleMania 30
NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - Some call it the Super Bowl of wrestling. After a weekend chalk full of events, the big show, WrestleMania XXX kicked off Sunday night in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
Hours before the show started, costumed fans strutted their stuff outside the dome. One man, dressed as a power ranger said, "WrestleMania is the best celebration of wrestling on the planet and what better way to spend it, dressed like the power rangers."
Fans flew in for the event from around the country and the globe. "I am from St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada and I'm here mainly to see Undertaker beat Brock Lesnar," said Lee Sullivan.
Others say they couldn't wait to see the legendary Hulk Hogan get back in the ring. "It's awesome, he's my childhood hero, grew up watching him and I wrestle myself and he's the whole reason I got in that business," said Corey Gebhardt.
For Gebhardt, the WWE provides inspiration for a real life passion. Other fans see it as a sort of escape from the real world. Decked out in costume, Ron Young said, "Everybody is just so much fun, you can come out and do this- whatever it is that we want to do."
In a town like New Orleans, the outlandish costumes and Hulk Hogan impersonators are more than accepted! In fact, a lot of these people say New Orleans is one of the best places to host WrestleMania. "We've had so much fun interacting with the people here local, all the great food, gotta go back and diet," said Young.
And one thing the fans we spoke to agree on, they'd all love to one day, come back.
Last year, WrestleMania brought in over a $100 million to the New York area. Local leaders here are hoping for the same results this year.
