JEFFERSON, LA (WVUE) - Three families are left homeless after a fire heavily damaged their homes early Monday morning in Old Jefferson.

The fire broke out at about 4 a.m. in the 600 block of Labarre Road. Two structures with four units were damaged in the blaze.

Assistant Fire Chief Paul Brondum said when fire crews arrived, flames were shooting out the roofs of both structures.

Brondum said everyone was able to escape safely. 40 fire personnel were on scene to battle the large fire.

Firefighters determined the fire started in the engine compartment of a car that people had been working on Sunday evening.

The Red Cross is assisting those who were displaced.
