METAIRIE, LA (WVUE) - A 26-year-old River Ridge man was rescued after driving his pickup truck off of the Causeway Saturday afternoon. The incident occurred at 3:00 p.m. in the southbound lanes, two miles from the south shore.

According to a Causeway spokesperson, the driver of the truck reached for his cell phone when he lost control of the truck and went over the railing. A man, later identified as Alvin Pike, who was following immediately behind him, stopped his vehicle and threw in a life preserver prior to jumping in.

Once Pike saved the man, they were both pulled from the water by passing motorists who used rope to pull the men out. The driver of the pickup received some cuts and bruises and complained of back pain. He was transported to a south shore hospital.

Following the incident, the bridge was shut down in both directions. The north bound lanes were reopened about ten minutes later and the south bound around 45 minutes after.

Causeway police officers, Jefferson Parish Firefighters and EMS personnel all responded to the scene.
