2 dead in Mandeville crash; police identify victims

MANDEVILLE, LA (WVUE) - State Police on the north shore say that two people died in an accident troopers could actually hear from inside their headquarters.

Authorities have identified the victims as Gordon Johnson, 54, of Covington, and Corinne Talbert, 63, of Madisonville.

The accident happened near Mandeville in the northbound lanes of Highway 190 between Fairway Drive and Highway 22. Police say the crash happened just a few feet from Troop L offices.

Louisiana State Police say Johnson was driving southbound when he veered to the right and sideswiped a Jeep. Johnson's vehicle then exited the roadway to the left, traveling into northbound lanes.

Here, investigators say he struck a Toyota Avalon head-on. The Toyota became airborne and struck another vehicle in the left lane.

Investigators say that drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors.

On Wednesday, Dr. Charles Preston, the Tammany Parish Coroner, said that Johnson had significant heart disease. Preston states that this may have been a contributing factor in the accident.

The crash remains under investigation. Toxicology results are pending.
