Family members arrested in brawl at Slidell restaurant

SLIDELL, LA (WVUE) - A weekend brawl between two families at a Slidell restaurant led to several people being arrested.

Slidell Police say the fight between the families resulted in at least two people being tased by a stungun and one grazed by a bullet.

The fight happened around 8 p.m. at Cheddar's restaurant located just off of Town Center Boulevard in the new Fremaux Town Center.

According to police, the altercation  between the families, who did not know each other, happened outside the restaurant.

According to witnesses, members of one family, who were waiting for a table, made degrading comments about members of another family leaving the restaurant.

A verbal altercation ensued, which quickly turned physical.  The two families, juveniles included, began fighting each other.

At some point, Shawn Sorrell pulled out a stun gun and shocked two members of the opposing party.

Sorrell then retrieved a .380 caliber handgun and fired one round into the crowd.

A bystander, who was attempting to break up the fight, was grazed in the leg by the bullet; however, no one was directly hit.

According to witness statements, it was apparent that Ms. Sorrell, who is now facing attempted first degree murder charges, was aiming for the crowd.

When officers arrived at the scene, one officer was attacked while trying to arrest one of the fighting suspects, as other officers chased suspects fleeing from the scene.

Due to approximately 20-30 people actively fighting, Slidell Police called for additional backup from the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office in order to assist with crowd control.

Nine people were arrested and more arrests are expected to be made.
