The Ernest N. Morial Convention Center will be the site of several events in the coming weeks, with groups scheduled and Essence Fest on the calendar. And soon, people will notice big changes around the building.
Last week, Gov. Bobby Jindal signed legislation to approve new development and improvements to space along the Riverfront and Convention Center Boulevard.
The legislation was sponsored by Rep. Walter Leger, D-New Orleans who said the bill will allow for private investment in this area, which hasn't seen a large-scale development since the 1984 World's Fair.
Tourism leaders said the improvements will make the city even more competitive when it comes to luring conventions and big events to town.
Convention center officials said the signing of the bill means they can now they can begin working with the developer and bring in private investors. They said this could be one of the largest infrastructure projects in the state in recent history.
