St. Bernard trio arrested for stealing crab traps

Three men from St. Bernard Parish were arrested for stealing 37 crab traps, worth over $1,500 from the Delacroix Island area.

According to police, members of the St. Bernard Sheriff's Department and Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries agents caught two of the three men were caught on with the stolen traps in the Violet Canal on June 18, 2014. The two men were identified as 28-year-old Jeremy Encardes of St. Bernard and 17-year-old Justin Vicknair of Violet.

Investigators learned that Encardes, removed the tags that identified the original owner and replaced them with tags bearing his name.

A third man, identified as 22-year-old Christopher Areas, Jr of Meraux was questioned and admitted that he and Encardes stole the traps from a truck off of Delacroix Highway.

Encardes was booked in the St. Bernard Parish Jail on two counts of theft of crab traps and three counts of possession of stolen property. His bond was set at $50,000. Vicknair was booked with three counts of possession of stolen property and released on bond of $17,500. Areas was booked with three counts of theft of the crab traps and was released on a $10,000 bond.
