Notice orders homeless to vacate area under Pontchartrain Expressway
The New Orleans Department of Health orders some of the city's homeless population to vacate the area under the Pontchartrain Expressway.
The city issued a notice on Monday, stating that the area has been declared a public health hazard. The area stretches from South Clairborne to St. Charles Avenue.
The notice gives the homeless 72 hours to evacuate the area with their personal property.
It also provides information about nearby homeless shelters where people staying under the bridge can access beds and food.
Some said they will try to catch bus tickets in order to stay with family members elsewhere in the state, but most everyone said they do not know where to go. Many do not think of shelters as options.
Those who have lived under the expressway the longest said this seems to happen every football season. New Orleans is just a few days before the first home preseason game.
