HOUMA, LA (WVUE) - Four men have been arrested on drug charges after a Houma man drove through a DWI checkpoint with a handgun in his lap.
The incident happened around 1:30 a.m. Sunday at a checkpoint in the 3700 block of Highway 56. As a white Nissan approached the checkpoint, police say they made contact with the driver.
Officers say the driver, identified as 25-year-old Lawrence Mitchell, was holding a handgun in his lap. Mitchell and his three passengers were detained by police.
K-9 units conducted a search of the vehicle. Police say marijuana, various guns (one stolen), prescription medications and suspected heroin were found in the vehicle.
All four men in the car had prior felony convictions, officers say.
Mitchell was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of marijuana and possession of a firearm with narcotics.
Dwayne Smith, 30, was charged with intent to distribute a controlled dangerous suspect.
Walden Mathieu, 25, was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of a firearm with narcotics, illegal possession of a stolen firearm, possession of drugs without a prescription and resisting an officer by giving a fake name.
Elroy Allridge, 25, was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of a firearm with narcotics and illegal carrying of a weapon.
They have been incarcerated at the Terrebonne Parish Jail awaiting trial or bond.
