METAIRIE, LA (WVUE) - A Metairie church makes it easy for Christians to worship from the comfort of their car.

For those who do not have time for a traditional Ash Wednesday service, Munholland United Methodist Church on Metairie Road is making it easy. It's one of several churches around the New Orleans area offering drive through ashes on this Ash Wednesday.

Worshipers can come in, receive ashes, a blessing and a cup of coffee right in the parking lot without getting out of the car.

"Most people are really excited that this this happening," said Annakate Rawles, a Munholland United Methodist Minister. "Most people said they just weren't sure how they were going to get ashes for the Lenten season. A lot of them are headed to work or just can't get out of their car and wander so we're excited to be doing that."

The church hopes to make it easy for individuals to worship on their time. Many Christians celebrate Ash Wednesday, marking exactly 46 days until Easter. Sundays are not counted in that number.

It's a time for penance, reflection and for some, fasting. Many people give up something, say a bad habit, for Lent.

The drive-through ashes are available from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church on Metairie Road.

Ashes are also available on-the-go in New Orleans at Christ Church Cathedral, located at 2919 St. Charles Avenue. They are offering ashes at numerous locations, including Audubon Park.

Slidell will offer ashes on-the-go at Christ Church, located at 1534 7th Street. They will be handing out what they call "Lent in a bag."
