Woman killed by suspected drunk driver in Gramercy

GRAMERCY, LA (WVUE) - A woman from Vacherie died early Sunday morning in a car crash after colliding with a man police believe was intoxicated.

According to the Louisiana State Police, 25-year-old Brittany Harris was killed this morning at the intersection of LA Highways 3125 and 3213 in Gramercy at 5:45 a.m.

Police say Newton was traveling eastbound on Hwy 3125 while 24-year-old Corey J. Newton was driving northbound on Hwy 3213. As both drivers approached the intersection of the two highways, Newton ran the red light and crashed his car into Harris' forcing her vehicle off the road and into a utility pole.

Harris was not wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead on the scene. Police say impairment on her part is not suspected.

Newton was not injured in the crash and police say he fled into a nearby wooded area on foot where he was located shortly after by St. James Parish Sheriff's Office deputies. Police booked Newton on charges of Negligent homicide, DWI (first offense), Reckless Operation, Hit-and-run driving and Traffic-control signals.

Police suspect Newton was drinking while driving. Results of toxicology tests on both drivers are pending.
