NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Beautiful and bountiful displays are up around the area as St. Joseph altars open for viewing.
The tradition of the St. Joseph's Altar is regaining prominence in New Orleans as more young people and schools get involved with the process.
Below is a listing of the St. Joseph's Altars. All are held around March 19, the Feast of St. Joseph.
ST. LOUIS CATHEDRAL (held indoors at convent chapel of the former St. Louis Cathedral School, 820 Dauphine St., New Orleans): March 18, preview viewing 3-6 p.m. March 19, 7:30 a.m. Mass at St. Louis Cathedral, then Archbishop Gregory M. Aymond will bless the altar at approximately 8:30 a.m., with public viewing to 3 p.m. Meals will be served in the cafeteria. Parking is available in the schoolyard, entering through the Dauphine Street gates.
ANNUNCIATION, Bogalusa: B and C Hall, 139 Cumberland St., sponsored by the Bogalusa Italian-American Cultural Society. March 13, blessing of the altar at 6 p.m. and rosary recitation. March 14, altar opens at 10 a.m. with feeding of the saints at 11 a.m. and pasta Milanese meal served from noon to 3 p.m. when altar closes.
ARCHBISHOP CHAPELLE HIGH SCHOOL, 8800 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie (gym): March 18, blessing at noon, chorale sings at 7:30 p.m. followed by rosary recitation at 8:30 p.m.; altar closes at 9 p.m. March 19, viewing from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with Tupa Tupa at noon, and meals in the cafeteria at 12:15 p.m.
ASCENSION OF OUR LORD, 1900 Greenwood Dr., LaPlace: March 19, Father Walter Austin, pastor, will bless altar after 8:30 a.m. Mass with viewing to noon. March 20, opens after 8:30 a.m. Mass until noon; reopens 6-7:30 p.m., with Stations of the Cross at 7 p.m. March 21, viewing from 9-11 a.m. and 3-5:30 p.m. (Mass at 4 p.m.).
