FOX 8 Defenders: UMC sub contractor receives some payment
NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The President of Brightway Signs in Hahnville tells FOX 8 he has received a payment of about $165,000 for work at the University Medical Center site in Mid City. Frank Gray Jr. says it's the first check he's received in months from Skanska Mapp, the company overseeing the project. Still, Gray says Brightway fabricated every inch of every sign you see on or around the site.
"When I don't get paid, I can't pay my suppliers. Then I got suppliers calling me...(asking) 'When am I getting paid? When am I getting paid?'" Gray first explained to the FOX 8 Defenders in March.
He also said the lack of payment hurts the health of his family-owned business. Getting paid this month helped him survive, but Gray says he's still owed more money - hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The state's Division of Administration tells FOX 8 that the $60 million in liens that sub-contractors filed against the property has dropped dramatically to a little more than $275,000. Because of that, spokesperson Meghan Parrish says the state allowed a more than $8 million payment to Skanska Mapp on March 25. We'll keep following up to bring you updates.
