NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Nearly 2,000 feet below the Gulf of Mexico, a research vessel had an "extremely rare" encounter with a massive creature off the coast of Louisiana.

At 1,962 feet below the Gulf, ROV Hercules encountered a massive sperm whale. The whale circled Hercules several times, giving the cameras a chance to capture incredible footage of the beautiful creature.

Encounters between sperm whales and remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs) are very rare, Nautilus crew members state.

The Nautilus set out on April 9 for a six month mission. The vessel will explore sites ranging from the Gulf of Mexico to British Columbia through late September. Six weeks of the expedition will be dedicated to exploration and mapping of the Galapagos Rift and the site of the first hydrothermal vent discovery in 1977, the Nautilus crew states.
