Undercover sting recovers stolen scooter

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - NOPD Officers went undercover to catch a man they say tried to sell a stolen scooter on Craigslist.

The scooter was stolen Monday, May 18 from the 2600 block of Chartres Street.

The scooter's owner told detectives he posted the scooter as missing on Craigslist.

Later that day, the victim says a stranger called and told him someone named "Tommy" had an identical scooter for sale on Craigslist.

The victim passed along the information to detectives who set up a sting.

Detectives Bryan Murvey, Brian Baye and Jamaane Roy posed as potential buyers and agreed to meet the seller at an intersection in Saint Roch.

They spotted the white scooter and three men in front of a house on North Rocheblave. When one of the detectives called the number the stranger had given for "Tommy" a man later identified as Charles Stewart answered the call.

Detectives arrested Steward and booked him with possession of stolen property.

Police returned the scooter to the victim after he was able to positively identify it and produce the proper registration.
