(WVUE) - Chocolate lovers have good reason to reach for a  sweet treat today as June 3 is National Chocolate  Macaroon Day. We were unable to find the creator and origin of the day but it's an "unofficial" National holiday.

In case you're not familiar with them, various recipes show they're typically made from ground almonds, coconut or nuts or even potato with sugar, egg white, honey vanilla spices and - in the case of the chocolate ones - a chocolate sauce. Historians show the macaroon origin dates back to an Italian monastery from the 9th century.

It's very popular in France and the rest of Europe and has become more trendy  recently in the U-S as pastry shops.

As for National Chocolate Macaroon day it follows closely behind National Macaroon Day which was celebrated on May 31. The only real big difference is that  layer of Chocolate. So if you're near a bakery today pick some up for yourself or for your family and friends to indulge on today.
