NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Donuts or doughnuts, cronuts or crullers. Whatever your preference, new data ranks the top 20 donut shops in the United States.

Friday is National Donut Day. To celebrate, Foursquare – a city guide app – ranked the top donut shops in the nation based on customer reviews.

District Donuts (District Donuts.Sliders.Brew) ranks second on the list. The Magazine Street restaurant offers seven rotating donuts every day from a catalog of over 100 options. In addition to the creative options, customers can always grab one of the staples: glazed, cinnamon, sugar or chocolate glazed. District is also known for its sliders and coffee.

Taking home the coveted "Best Donut in America" award is Dough, a small donut shop in Brooklyn, New York.

National Donut Day is celebrated on the first Friday of each June, succeeding the Donut Day created by the Salvation Army in 1938. The idea for Donut Day began on the battlefields of France during World War I when Salvation Army workers served coffee and donuts to soldiers in the trenches. Rations were poor so the donut idea was conceived as a means of bringing the soldiers cheer, according to the Salvation Army.
