NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - Sheriff Marlin Gusman says the sheriff's office is making progress toward compliance with a consent decree.

In a news release from his office, he says they've gone from 65% non-compliance with requirements to just 25% non-compliance.

"The Sheriff's Office is steadily moving toward compliance and we expect to make even more progress toward compliance as we move to the new inmate housing facility in the coming days," said Sheriff Marlin N. Gusman.

According to the monitor's report, medical and mental health care for inmates has improved.

"More work needs to be done, but the level of care has improved dramatically since Correct Care Solutions, Inc. (CCS) began providing services to perhaps, the most physically and mentally ill population in Orleans Parish," the report said.

By contrast, a monitor's report in August of 2014 called implementation of the consent decree reforms "disorganized" and described mental health care at the jail as "virtually non-existent."
