Runaway Gretna boy told detectives he slept in dumpster

JEFFERSON PARISH, LA (WVUE) - The 11-year-old Gretna boy who went missing after he hailed a cab to the Superdome Wednesday was back at home with his mother on Thursday.

John Elrod was the subject of a search after police said he left his home on Westmeade Drive at about 6:30 a.m. and asked to be driven to the Champions Square area. He was found walking down Downman Road in New Orleans East. Police did not say how he got to the East from downtown.

After being turned over to JPSO detectives, Elrod was taken to the investigations bureau to be questioned about his disappearance. Elrod admitted running away from home because of personal reasons. He told detectives he slept in a dumpster overnight and was picked up by NOPD Thursday morning.

After the interview, the boy was turned over to his mother.
