Gretna police are investigating the death of a 3-year-old boy, according to a report from Nola.com | The Times-Picayune.
The child's aunt brought him to a Jefferson Parish hospital with severe head injuries. Officers said he also suffered several other injuries.
The aunt, Ardella Lorio, 34, is charged with juvenile cruelty.
She was in jail when doctors took her nephew off life support, according to Gretna Police Deputy Chief Anthony Christiana.
An autopsy was performed Thursday morning, but the coroner's office is not releasing results or cause of death until it has more information.
Lorio told police the boy fell from an iron security door at her Gretna home and injured his head. Police said her statement was not consistent with other injuries on the child's body.
Lorio had been watching the boy while his mother recovered from injuries she recently received, according to the report.
Christiana said it is possible new charges could be filed.
