Pregnant woman escapes armed robber on St. Charles Avenue

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - A pregnant woman said she ran for safety when a man with a gun walked into the Smoothie King on St. Charles Avenue.

The unidentified woman was working at the smoothie store when the armed robber held up the location around 11 a.m. on Nov. 27.

"When she saw the man walk in, she saw he had a gun, she just jumped the counter ran to Walgreen's," Leila Rad, the area manager for Smoothie King, said. "She said she already called the police."

Rad was speaking on behalf of the employee, who narrowly escaped the gunman.

"She is the most shaken up unfortunately," Rad said. "She's pregnant, so it's just startling. She's fine, but she's just really shaken up about it. I don't know who wouldn't be, an armed robbery, it must be terrifying."

The woman was taken away in an ambulance, but is expected to be okay.

Earlier that morning, around 1:30 a.m., police said a woman was shot while standing near a nightclub on St. Charles Avenue.

The shooting happened just a few hundred feet away from the Smoothie King.

"Definite concern with everything that happened a week ago on Magazine and now here," said Terry Fogleman, who works nearby. "It makes you wonder."

Fogleman hopes the recent crimes encourage police to increase patrols in the area.

"I think we do need more of a police presence," Fogleman said. "You don't see much here, I think they're concentrated in the French Quarter because that's where people expect the crime to be."

Rad said the response to the armed robbery at the Smoothie King was fairly quick, it's something he hopes will deter violent crime from happening again.
