Woman arrested after allegedly lying about armed robbery to cover up fight
NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - A 27-year-old woman is in police custody after she allegedly opened fire on her husband and then tried to cover it up with a false police report.
According to NOPD, Johnniesha Egana claimed that two armed men attempted to rob her husband, but forensic evidence put the gun in her hands.
The incident started around 7:50 p.m. on Jan. 4 in the 5200 block of St. Claude Avenue. Police were called out after gunshots rang out in the area. According to NOPD, detectives spoke with Egana who told police her husband was the target of two armed robbers. According to Egana, her husband managed to pull out his gun and fire several shots into the air, scaring off the alleged robbers.
Through the course of the investigation, detectives said they found evidence that the attempted robbery never actually happened.
According to police, the incident started as an argument between Egana and her husband. Egana's husband told police that he walked out of their home after an argument with his wife, who then followed him and tried to pepper spray him. When he tried to push her away, police say Egana pulled out a handgun and fired several shots into the air.
NOPD believes Egana's story was an attempt to cover up what really happened.
Forensic tests revealed that Egana fired the weapon in question according to detectives. That, combined with testimony from her husband, led to Egana's arrest.
Officers booked Egana with Illegal Possession of a Firearm, Illegal Discharge of a Weapon, Injuring Public Records and Disturbing the Peace.
