Police probe possible link between home invasions, rape

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - Police said Friday that they are investigating the possibility that a Tulane student arrested in four home invasions may have also committed rape.

Oliver Jerde, 22, was arrested Thursday after a woman called police at about 3:30 a.m. to report a person trying to break into her home in the 800 block of Pine Street. Police said when they arrived, Jerde was inside the home holding a bottle of alcohol that belonged to the resident. The woman told police she did not know Jerde and he did not have permission to be in her home.

Jerde has since been connected to break-ins and burglaries that have occurred since Jan. 15. on both Lowerline and Broadway streets. On Monday, Jan. 18, the night of one of the break-ins, police said a rape was reported a block away and in the same time frame. The victim gave police a suspect description similar to the one given in the home invasions.

Jerde remains jailed in Orleans Parish Prison. He is due for a bond hearing on Jan. 28.
