Suspect in deadly ambush in St. John on trial for rape in Terrebonne Parish
HOUMA, LA (WVUE) - One of the suspects charged in the deadly 2012 ambush of St. John Parish deputies is on trial for rape in Terrebonne Parish this week.
There was heightened security around and inside the Terrebonne Parish courthouse Monday, where jury selection began in the trial of Terry Lyn Smith. Smith faces two counts of aggravated rape, three counts of aggravated incest and one count of sexual battery. Smith was cuffed and shackled around the waist as he entered court escorted by several deputies.
Smith is also charged in the August 2012 ambush of St. John Parish deputies. Two of the deputies were shot and killed and two others were injured. Authorities have said some of the suspects charged in the ambush have ties to an extremist group known as Sovereign Citizens. The FBI considers Sovereign Citizens domestic terrorists due to their anti-government beliefs.We will continue to keep you posted on the latest developments in that trial.
