COVINGTON, LA (WVUE) - Police found a 17-year-old Mandeville boy face-down, dead in a ditch.

The teenager was found at Columbia St. Landing in Covington at approximately 11 p.m. on Monday, according to St. Tammany Parish Coroner Dr. Charles Preston.

Alexander James Shelby and a friend had apparently been using illegal drugs and both blacked out, Preston said.

When the friend woke up, Shelby was in a flooded ditch.

Investigators believe the teens had been smoking Mojo, a synthetic marijuana.

"This tragedy only underscores the dangers associated with drug use, particularly the synthetics that have infiltrated our community in recent years," Preston said.  "If anything positive can come from this death, it might be that parents will use this sad incident to initiate discussions with their children about the risks of using drugs."

An autopsy is pending and cause of death has not yet been determined.
