Police: Customer kills unruly man at Mandeville gas station

MANDEVILLE, LA (WVUE) - The Mandeville Police Department is investigating a shooting involving two customers at a Shell gas station.

The business is located in the 3900 block of  Hwy. 22. The incident happened around 9 a.m.

The victim, identified as Shawn Breland, 42, of Folsom, was transported to Lakeview Regional Medical Center, where he later died.

According to police, Breland entered the store and made a purchase. He immediately began berating the store clerk, using racial slurs and appeared to be upset. The clerk ordered Breland to leave the store and threatened to call police.

The suspect left the store, but came back several times, becoming more aggressive with each visit.

A man trying to make a purchase, carrying a gun that was holstered in plain view, tried to diffuse the situation, advising Breland to leave the store. He left, but came back and threw chips at the clerk, according to investigators.

The man carrying the gun tried to get the license plate number of the deceased. That is when Breland attacked the armed man.

Surveillance video shows the armed man getting thrown around and finally cornered in the store. He fired one shot at Breland, then two more rounds when Breland continued to attack.

The shooter has not been charged, but the investigation is being turned over to the district attorney's office for further review.
