NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - Former New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith was shot and killed in the Lower Garden District Saturday night.
According to NOPD, 28-year-old Cardell Hayes shot and killed Smith after rear ending him near the corner of Camp and Felicity around 11:29 p.m.
Investigators say Smith was driving an SUV near Sophie Wright Place when he was rear-ended by a Hummer H2 driven by Hayes. The impact caused Smith's vehicle to hit the rear of an Impala, which police say was traveling with him.
After the collision, police said Smith and Hayes exchanged words. During the argument, Hayes pulled out a gun and shot Smith multiple times and shot Smith's wife Racquel twice in the right leg according to NOPD. His wife was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said Hayes stayed on the scene until officers arrived and is now in police custody. The weapon used in the incident was also recovered by police.
NOPD Chief Michael Harrison will host a press conference to update the public on the latest in this ongoing investigation at 1:15 p.m. today. Fox 8 will carry it live here.
