BELLE CHASSE, LA (WVUE) - An accident involving 11 vehicles caused multiple injuries and closed the Belle Chasse tunnel Monday morning, according to the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Department.
The Sheriff's Office said five vehicles had to be towed from the scene and a 55-year-old man had to be extricated from his car. He was hospitalized with minor injuries.
The preliminary investigation showed that the pileup began just before 7 a.m. when a car that was about to exit the tunnel was rear-ended by a vehicle that was following too closely. A chain reaction of multiple crashes followed.
At 7:53 a.m., all lanes were reopened.
The accident is under investigation, and anyone with information is asked to call Deputy Joey Rees at (504) 564-2525.
