La. State Police investigate two fatal crashes involving motorcycles

Louisiana State Police investigated two separate fatal crashes in Jefferson Parish, both involving motorcycles.

A spokesperson with Louisiana State Police Troop B said the first crash happened around 11:00 p.m. on US 90 at US 90B. Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2016 Suzuki DR650 motorcycle driven by Joey M. Mayeux, 54, of Avondale was traveling east on US 90 in the left lane.  For unknown reasons, the motorcycle traveled across the median and into the path of a 1999 Chevrolet Blazer driven by Randy Jones, 56, of Marrero.

The Chevrolet was traveling west on US 90 in the left lane.  Police say Mayeux was ejected from the Suzuki and pronounced dead on the scene. He was wearing a helmet.  Jones was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Impairment is unknown, however Jones submitted to a blood test and the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab will perform the toxicology analysis.  An autopsy will be conducted on Mayeux and a toxicology is pending.

Troopers investigated a second crash just after midnight on Jefferson Highway at Claiborne Court. Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2015 Victory Cross Country motorcycle, driven by James Newsom, 35, of New Orleans was traveling east in the center lane.

Crystal M. Ferguson, 32 of Atlanta, GA was walking across Jefferson Highway and was struck by the motorcycle. Ferguson was transported to University Hospital where she died. Newsom was wearing a helmet and suffered minor injuries. Impairment is suspected on the part of Ferguson and a toxicology test is pending an autopsy.  Newsom voluntarily submitted to a breath test.  The crash remains under investigation.
