Suspected iPhone thief makes mistake that may cost him

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - It wasn't too difficult for police to name a suspect in the case of an iPhone theft from a restaurant in the Central Business District.

NOPD says 17-year-old Keith Brown walked into a restaurant in the 100 block of Baronne, just off Canal, and inquired about a job.  He was asked to wait in the back of the restaurant to be interviewed.  While waiting, police say he took an Apple iPhone from a purse which was sitting in the back hallway.

Before stealing the phone, however, police say Brown identified himself to managers, giving them his real name.  Police were able to take the name and run it through a photographic line-up.  He was then positively identified by restaurant workers.

The NOPD has now obtained an arrest warrant for Keith Brown for the incident, which happened on August 3, 2016 around 3 p.m.

Police say Brown is known to frequent the French Quarter and Downtown areas. When apprehended, he will be charged with theft and illegal possession of stolen things.

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Keith Brown is asked to contact Eighth District Detectives at 504-658-6080 or Crimestoppers at 822-1111 or toll-free 1-877-903-STOP.
