NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - Nearly a year behind schedule, the new VA Medical Center will open Friday to serve 70,000 area veterans.
Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert McDonald will travel to the dedication of the billion dollar project in the Mid-City medical corridor.
Since Hurricane Katrina damaged the New Orleans VA Medical Center, the VA has gotten by with an assortment of outpatient facilities in the system's old downtown hospital.
The VA broke ground on the project in 2010.
Located next to the University Medical Center, the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System will offer 200 beds and a wide range of health care services.
The new hospital was expected to create a thousand jobs.
The dedication of the medical center, located at 2400 Canal Street, will be held at 9 a.m. on Friday, November 18.
