AVONDALE, LA (WVUE) - A wild chase through two parishes ended with at least eight crime scenes and a kidnapping suspect exchanging gunfire with Jefferson Parish deputies.
The sound of gunfire echoed through the streets of Avondale when deputies got into a Tuesday night shootout after an hour-long chase.
Several witnesses told our partners at NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune that the gunfire sounded like the grand finale of a fireworks show.
The shootout ended with the arrest of a man accused of kidnapping a woman and taking police on a chase.
St. Tammany parish investigators say 41-year old Christopher Garcie tied the victim up and abducted her.
She escaped bound with zip ties and ran into a Rouses grocery store for help.
She told workers she jumped from his moving pickup truck.
A description of the truck was broadcast and investigators say Causeway Police spotted the truck headed south on the bridge.
Jefferson Parish deputies and Louisiana State police caught up with the suspect after he crashed his truck in a ditch in Avondale.
They say he would not get out of the vehicle and exchanged gunfire with police.
Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand said Garcie's mother helped police by brokering her son's surrender.
"His mother, over an hour ago arrived at the scene, and assisted us in talking to him and assisted us in giving us information in order to be able to talk him out of the vehicle," Normand said.
