HAMMOND, LA (WVUE) - Louisiana State Police are investigating a shooting in Tangipahoa Parish where family members say a 29 year old man was shot during an incident involving Hammond Police officers.

The shooting happened around 3 a.m. in the 800 block of South Walnut Drive.

According to family members, 29-year-old Leroy Johnson Jr. was pulling out of the driveway of the home when police arrived. Johnson then drove away from the residence and later crashed about a block away from the home.  Family members tell FOX 8 that during the incident police shot Johnson multiple times.  They also said a passenger was inside the vehicle but was not injured in the crash or the shooting.

Family members say Johnson was taken to North Oaks Hospital where his condition is currently unknown.

It is unclear why police were called to the home in the first place. FOX 8 has reached out to the Hammond Police Department for comment. They have not returned any calls.

In a statement, Louisiana State Police Troop L spokesperson Dustin Dwight said the investigation into the shooting is in its early stages and State Police will forward any findings to the Tangipahoa District Attorney's Office.
