Gretna officer, suspect recovering after chase, shootout

Happening Today: Officer injured, suspect shot during chase

GRETNA, LA (WVUE) - A Gretna police officer and a suspect are recovering after they were both injured during a chase that led to a shootout.

The chase started just after 9 p.m. Thursday in Marrero and ended in Gretna.

Jefferson parish Sheriff Newell Normand said Ray John Brown, 17, was in a stolen car that was spotted in Marrero by a license plate recognition camera.

Normand says the KIA Optima was stolen from Kenner on December 3.

Normand says Brown took deputies on a chase into Gretna where police set up a roadblock at Huey P. Long and Fourth Street.

Authorities say Brown tried to break through the barricade and hit an officer with his car.

Brown abandoned the stolen car, fled the scene on foot and was captured a short time later hiding in another car in the 500 block of Derbigny Street.

In the ensuing gunfight, Brown was shot in the stomach and taken into custody.

The Gretna officer, who has not been identified, is recovering from his injuries.

Brown's injuries are considered non-life threatening.

He was also wanted on an outstanding warrant for aggravated assault with a weapon in Orleans Parish.
