NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The 800 block of Bourbon Street was closed for much of the day Tuesday as police investigated a homicide.

The victim's roommate, who has not been identified, is in custody, police said.

Police said the victim died from "unspecified trauma."

Police were called for a wellness check at the home in the 800 of Bourbon Street. No one answered the door. Some SWAT officers positioned themselves on nearby balconies and rooftops while others smashed through the front door about an hour after the initial call.

"Once inside the residence, the SOD Unit observed a subject down. A canvass revealed another subject inside the residence," said NOPD Lt. Jimmie Turner.

The roommate was placed on a stretcher and put in an ambulance as he was taken into custody.

"He was transported to a local hospital for precautionary measures, but we don't know what injuries he sustained," Turner said.

At this point, police don't know how cooperative the suspect will be.

"As the investigation proceeds, we will interview him at a later date," said Turner.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.
