LAPLACE, LA (WVUE) - St. John the Baptist Parish sheriff's deputies arrested a man accused of hitting a mother and his seven-week-old child over a custody battle.

Ronald Lathers, Jr., 29, of LaPlace, was arrested Tuesday. The alleged attacked happened on April 13 around 5:20 p.m.

Deputies were called to the 100 block of Montegut about a man and woman arguing over child custody.

Deputies learned Lathers wanted to take his child from the woman. An argument escalated into a physical fight. Officers said Lathers allegedly hit the woman while she was holding the infant. He also hit the infant in the head, deputies said.

Both alleged victims were taken to the hospital for treatment. The woman was released. The infant remains in stable condition in the hospital.

Lathers was booked for attempted first-degree murder. He is being held in custody in lieu of a $500,000 bond.
