HARVEY, LA (WVUE) - A police chase ended in a fatal crash in Harvey on Wednesday, closing a stretch of Destrehan Avenue.
The crash happened just after 1:30 p.m. near the intersection of Destrehan Ave. and Patriot Drive.
The pursuit began when JPSO deputies attempted to stop a 2009 Kia mini as part of a narcotics investigation. The driver of the van, 36-year-old Royce James, refused to stop and rammed several JPSO units. James started driving the wrong way and struck two other vehicles that were not involved in the pursuit.
James and his front seat passenger, 34-year-old Devon Hayes, were taken to a local hospital where they were treated for injuries in the crash. Sheriff Newell Normand says a third passenger in the mini-van died.
Both drivers of the two other vehicles were also taken to a local hospital to be treated for injuries. One driver was treated and release and the other will be released from the hospital soon.
Normand says that both James and Hayes have lengthy criminal histories. James has a history of armed robberies, attempted armed robberies, conspiracy to commit armed robberies and possession of heroin charges. Hayes has a history of possession of marijuana, simple battery and resisting an officer.
The crash remains under investigation.
