HANCOCK COUNTY, MS (WVUE) - Hancock Country police have made arrests after the body of a Mississippi man was found in New Orleans East. The body of 54-year-old Philip Sherman Whitaker was found Wednesday on the Michoud Boulevard exit ramp off of Interstate 10 in New Orleans East. According to police, Whitaker's body was found wrapped in carpet.
Hancock County police say 70-year-old Terry M. Smith and his son, 46-year-old Carl S. Smith were both taken into custody. Investigators were able to link both Carl and Terry after surveillance footage, taken from businesses in Poplarville, MS., showed the Smith's driving Whitaker's vehicle.
When questioned by authorities, both men confessed to the murder and disposal of the body. They told investigators that Whitaker was a friend and came over to Smiths' home in the 21000 block of Ponderosa Trail in Kiln, for a visit. An argument ensued and Whitaker was fatally shot. The Smith's later took Whitaker's body to New Orleans East.
Both Terry M. Smith and Carl S. Smith have been charged with murder and remain in Hancock County jail.
