Police name suspect in killing of Gentilly Subway owner
NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - Police have identified a suspect after the owner of a Gentilly Subway restaurant was shot and killed inside his store Wednesday.
Lavar Marquise Butler, age 20, is wanted for first-degree murder in the death of Adnan Alsar.
People who knew the victim say he was an incredibly kind man, one who was prone to give away free food to people in need.
"I can't believe this happened," said nearby store employee, Mary Banks.
Police say at around 7:15 p.m., Butler entered the restaurant with a gun. A physical altercation ensued, followed by two shots fired.
A nearby business owner, who didn't want to be identified, says, "It's really sad that it had to happen to someone who was trying to make a living, and take care of his children."
People who work around the Subway say crime has been rampant in the shopping complex for months.
"I don't know what more we can do to try to stop all this violence," the business owner said.
Store employee Abbe Ayob adds, "The area is very dangerous, especially when it's raining, it's too dark. There have to be police here, car, working here, in this area, especially at night."
A business owner, who herself was robbed just last month, stressed the importance of not fighting back.
She says, "All I can say is if someone comes up to you because I've been there before, is just give them what they want, don't fight them."
As she and others believe, it's not worth losing your life. Adnan Alsar leaves behind a wife and three young children.
Police haven't yet said if Butler was attempting to rob the Subway before the physical altercation occurred, or what led to the gunfire.
