MARRERO, LA (WVUE) - One person was shot during a confrontation with a Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office deputy in Marrero on Thursday, according to a sheriff's office spokesman.

The shooting happened near the intersection of Acre Road and Garden Road in Marrero.

The injury is not life-threatening, according to investigators.

JPSO released the following account of what happened:

Sheriff Joseph Lopinto reports that at approximately 3:35pm today, JPSO detectives were involved in an incident in which a detective discharged his firearm six times at a suspect.  The suspect, Quintin Sanders, 31, of Marrero is currently being treated at a local hospital for a single gunshot wound to the shoulder. His injury is not considered life-threatening.

JPSO detectives were conducting proactive patrols in the Marrero area when they attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a maroon Chevrolet Malibu being driven by Sanders.  Sanders initially refused to stop, then did so at the intersection of Garden Rd. and Acre Rd.  An unmarked JPSO vehicle pulled across the street in front of the suspect vehicle in a blocking position, and the detectives exited to speak with Sanders.  As a detective approached his vehicle, Sanders attempted to drive away, momentarily dragging one detective who was holding onto the door handle.  The suspect vehicle struck the JPSO vehicle, then began accelerating toward a second detective, who was also on foot.  That detective, fearing for his life, discharged his firearm into the vehicle.

None of the detectives involved were seriously injured during the incident.

Upon his release from the hospital, Sanders will be charged with two counts of Attempted First Degree Murder and multiple narcotics and firearms offenses.
