Commission approves 14 strip club limit in Vieux Carre Entertainment District
NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The City Planning Commission approved a 14 strip club limit in a seven-block section of the French quarter at a meeting Tuesday. The move came as a relief to some exotic dancers.
The adult entertainers believed that stricter limits on strip clubs were about to be sanctioned by the commission, so nearly 200 of them showed up at the Rosenwald Gym in Central City.
Many feared they would lose their jobs. Some said they have been hurting because of recent crackdowns that have shut down a number of strip clubs.
"Did you find weapons of mass destruction? No, they used crazy laws and arrested women for touching their own bodies," one worker said to the commission.
After an hour-long debate, the City Planning Commission voted 6-to-0 to set a 14 strip club limit in a seven-block section of bourbon street from Iberville to St. Ann. That section is known as the Vieux Carre Entertainment District.
They did not vote to limit strip clubs to one per block face as had been previously discussed. The measure now goes to the New Orleans City Council for consideration so it is not over yet.
