COVINGTON, LA (WVUE) - The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office says a 5-year-old is dead after drowning in a swimming pool in Covington.
Officials say deputies were dispatched to a home on Plantation Street just before 4 p.m. Saturday.
According to the child's grandmother, the 5-year-old boy was visiting her home when she realized she did not know where she was. The grandmother told deputies that she did not immediately become alarmed because he likes to play hide and seek.
Soon after, the boy's mother arrived at the home and began helping the grandmother look for him. The child was later found floating in the above ground swimming pool in the backyard.
The child was pulled out of the pool by his father who immediately began CPR.
First responders who arrived at the scene took over and continued CPR on the child. The boy was then rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
"This is an extremely sad and tragic event and our prayers are with this family," says Sheriff Randy Smith. "We urge parents, especially as the weather continues to warm up, to be extra cautious when children are playing in and around water."
