VENICE, LA (WVUE) - Five injured boaters were rescued by the Coast Guard near Venice early Sunday morning.
The rescue happened 23 miles southeast of Venice.
Officials say the Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a call from a boater just after midnight stating that they had struck a decommissioned rig. The caller also stated that multiple people on board were injured.
The Coast Guard launched a Response Boat and crew from Venice and a helicopter aircrew from the Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans.
Two of the injured boaters were airlifted to University Medical Center. One boater suffered a broken arm and the other suffered from a possible collapsed lung. Both of their conditions are currently unknown.
Three crew members who suffered minor injuries were transferred by boat to Venice where emergency crews were waiting to treat them. All three are listed in stable condition.
Officials say the cause of the incident is under investigation.
