Coast Guard responding to oil spill near Breton Sound

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - The Coast Guard responded to an oil spill near Breton Sound Thursday.

Coast Guard Sector New Orleans watch standers received a call at 6:29 p.m. reporting a 61-foot motor vessel hitting the Breton Sound 18 production platform resulting in the spill of an estimated 840 gallons of crude oil from the platform, according to the report.

Environmental Safety & Health arrived on scene and deployed boom around the platform to mitigate the spread of product.

Platform personnel are working to secure the source of the leak.

Involved in the response are:

  • Coast Guard Sector New Orleans
  • Louisiana Oil Spill Coordinator's Office
  • Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality
  • ES&H
  • Clean Gulf Associates
  • Southern Seaplanes

There were no reported injuries.

The cause of the incident is under investigation.
