PEARL RIVER, LA (WVUE) - The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says a man is dead following a boating accident in the West Pearl River.

According to officials, the body of 33-year-old Chad Panks of Pearl River was recovered by the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office Marine Division Friday around 9 p.m.

Family members told sheriff's deputies that Panks and his dog was traveling to his houseboat around 2 a.m. Friday. Panks' dog returned to his home Friday afternoon around 3:30 p.m. without him.

Family members began a search for Panks and found his sunken boat around 4:40 p.m. The family notified authorities and LDWF and STPSO deputies immediately began to search for Panks.

After recovering Panks' body, deputies turned over his body to the St. Tammany Parish Coroner's Office who will determine an official cause of death.

LDWF will take over the investigation into the crash. Agents believe that Panks' boat may have struck a submerged tree causing it to sink.

Agents added that Panks' body was found without a personal floatation device.
