SLIDELL, LA (WVUE) - A Mississippi man was killed on foot Sunday night after trying to cross Interstate 10 near Old Spanish Trail in Slidell.

Around 8:30 p,m. Sylvester Horton, 45, of Canton, MS walked from the grass median median in an attempt to cross to the right shoulder of the westbound lanes of I-10.  When Horton entered the center lane, he was struck by a Honda Fit.

The car was driven by Cecilia Gayle Genova, 23, of Metairie.

State police said Horton was wearing dark colored clothing and it was raining at the time of the crash.  Horton was pronounced deceased on scene by the St. Tammany Parish Coroner's Office.

As part of the ongoing investigation, blood samples were obtained. The results are pending scientific analysis.  Genova provided Troopers with a voluntary breath sample, which showed no amount of alcohol present.

During the crash investigation, a 2003 Cadillac Deville was located approximately 3.7 tenths of a  mile west of the crash location. The vehicle was abandoned on the right shoulder of I-10 westbound, not running and no lights on. Inside the vehicle, several items were located that linked the vehicle to Horton, police said.
