Person of interest wanted in paintball attack

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Police are searching for a person of interest in connection with a paintball attack against a woman on a riding lawnmower. Detectives with the New Orleans Police Department want to interview 49-year old Cheryl Elphage as a person of interest in an aggravated assault incident that occurred on Friday, June 29.

Police say Elphage is listed as the registered owner of a 2007 gray Chevy Impala, bearing Louisiana license plate #135CNG. Detectives believe that car was involved in the paintball attack in the Lower Ninth Ward.

The victim told police she was riding her company's riding lawnmower northbound on Desire Parkway when she observed a car fitting that description on a side street. The car stopped in the middle of Benefit Street when the front-seat passenger fired two shots towards the woman on the lawnmower. That victim sustained an injury to her right lower leg.

Police say Elphage is only a person of interest at this time and is not wanted for the crime. However, investigators believe she may have valuable information as to who was inside of the car during the time of the incident. When captured, the suspect will be booked with a charge of aggravated assault.

Anyone with any information regarding this incident should contact Fifth District detectives at 504-658-6050 or Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111 or toll-free at 1-877-903-STOP.
