CHALMETTE, LA (WVUE) - UPDATE: St. Bernard Sheriff's officials now say the victim of the Thursday night shooting was a 4-year-old girl.
Deputies were called to a Chalmette home shortly after 9:30 p.m. on July 5 to investigate reports of a child shot. The little girl was transported to University Medical Center in New Orleans where she was pronounced dead.
Deputies did recover a handgun they believe was used in the shooting. Sheriff Jimmy Pohlmann said the shooting appears to be accidental. Deputies are continuing to investigate how the shooting happened.

Neighbors tell FOX 8 that the shooting victim is a young girl who may have accidentally shot herself. The SBPSO has yet to confirm the details of the shooting.
