ALGIERS, LA (WVUE) - A woman in Algiers said it appears someone tried to poison the feral cats she feeds in her back yard near Federal City.

Suson Pardew found a suspicious package of cheesecloth wrapped ground meat in her yard near the feeding station.

Tests on the meat confirmed her fears.

"When we found the meat, the reason I thought there was something wrong with it. It didn't smell like meat, it smelled like it was sweet-smelling, it smelled like fruit maybe, Pardew said. "I transported it to LSU disease diagnostic lab and they ran tests on it and it came back positive for antifreeze."

Antifreeze can be deadly for pets.

Pardew said it does not appear any of the feral cats she cares for managed to eat the poisoned meat.

The Humane Society of Louisiana plans to put out flyers in the neighborhood seeking information about the incident.
