JEFFERSON PARISH, LA (WVUE) - A man who was indicted by a Jefferson Parish grand jury for the murder of Big Lee Martin pleaded not guilty to the charges Friday.

Wayne Higgins was indicted with second-degree murder in the death of Big Lee Martin, according to court documents.

The charge requires a mandatory life sentence, and Higgins plead not guilty to that charge. A hearing was scheduled for August.

Higgins is accused of shooting Martin May 5 after an altercation.

According to deputies, Martin was watering outside his home when Higgins started to back out of his driveway next door.

Deputies say Martin sprayed water on Higgins' vehicle, and after an exchange of words sprayed inside the vehicle and in his face.

That's when deputies say Higgins stepped out of the vehicle with a gun, shooting and killing Martin in his own yard.
